Bird Feeder Tips
• Bird feeders can be hung from trees, hung from posts and around
porches and set on the ground. The ideal spot of course, is where you can comfortably
chill out while watching them eat. In front of a window is good as long as the birds
aren’t frightened by the activity on the other side of the window. Millions of birds
die each year from colliding with human structures like windows. Place the feeder
within 3 ft of the window to reduce collisions. Also, window decals can also help
prevent accidents.
• Keep the feeder in a spot that is easy to get to. When it’s frigid in the winter, you need to be able to replace the food easily or you may not do it and birds will be depending on that food source. Be careful what bird food is used in the bird feeder if you are placing it in a garden. Bird seeds sprout and grow. You may end up spending all of your “chill out” time pulling up unwanted plants.
• If you have squirrels, hanging your bird feeder from a tree limb invites squirrels to consider it a squirrel feeder. If you have to hang it from a tree, we’ve found some squirrel proof feeders that do work.
• Finding the right spot for your bird feeder may take some time, but once it’s in place and the birds feel comfortable, the only thing you will need to do is keep it filled with quality food and clean it on a regular basis.
• Wild bird guide books are great to have around to help identify the birds that frequent your area. We had a noisy little bird who moved into one of our bird houses. It had a very distinct familiar sound, but we couldn’t quite figure out what it was. Guide book to the rescue. Our noisy bird is a Chipper Sparrow that sounds like a sewing machine.
• Purchase several types of bird feeders to handle different kinds of wild bird food so you attract as many bird varieties as possible. If you only get a small bird feeder it probably won’t be able to accommodate the larger birds, because they don’t have big enough platforms or perches. Also, several bird feeders or larger platform feeders will minimize birds fighting over food.
With more and more land being developed, birds are losing much of their natural habitat. Food sources are becoming more scare. So wild bird feeding stations are sometimes the only options birds have.
Consider feeding birds throughout the year so migratory birds have ready food in
the spring. Also, parent birds will have available food for their young. Be sure
to provide a clean water source as well.
